February Birthstone & Birth Flower Guide: Amethyst & Violet

February is here again and you know what that means, it’s time for another guide! We previously chatted about this month’s notable birthstone, amethyst, along with its unique features and astrological properties but this time, we’re going to discuss this month’s birth flower. What is February’s birth flower you may ask? It’s violet! We’re here to share all things about this pretty flower. Let’s get started!

What Is Amethyst?

Before we dive into the world of violets, let’s briefly chat about the gemstone of the month! Known as “the gem of fire”, amethyst is a purple variety of the quartz mineral species. Amethysts are not just one standard shade of purple, this birthstone can come in an array of hues! From light lilac to deep reddish royal purple (sometimes referred to as “raspberry”), you’re sure to find your perfect amethyst shade!

Amethyst Meaning

Lastly, like with any gemstone, there’s special meaning behind them! For amethyst, this stone is known as the stone of faithful love, and perfectly enough for the month of love, it is the stone of St. Valentine! How awesome is that?!

What Is A Violet?

Now it’s time to chat about all things violet! Native to Europe and Asia, this asymmetrical flower is a genus of the Violaceae family, which is also home to 400 other species - cool right? Aside from the popular shade of purple, this flower also happens to come in a few other colors! Blue, yellow, white and cream are other common colors that you will find, and not only that, violets can also come in a unique bi-colored form, which is typically blue and yellow! Violets are the state flower for a few different states, one of them being our sweet home Illinois!

Violet Meaning

Moving along, violets hold a lot of symbolism! Many years ago, the ancient Greeks considered violets to be a symbol of fertility and love. For that reason, they used violets in love potions! Additionally, violets symbolize faithfulness, everlasting love, innocence and remembrance. To this day, they still serve as a reminder of dependability, loyalty and thoughtfulness.
