January Birthstone and Birth Flower Guide: Garnet & Carnation

Happy New Year! Hard to believe that 2023 is already here, but now that the year is off to a fresh start, it’s time for a fresh new birthstone guide. We have previously chatted about the many unique properties and astrology behind garnet, but this time we're throwing birth flowers into the mix! The birth flower for January is carnation and oh are some fun facts about this flower. Let’s get started!

What Is Garnet?

Before we dive into all things carnation, let’s have a quick refresher on the garnet gemstone! This birthstone ranks 6.5-7.5 on the Mohs scale and comes in a rich variety of colors. What colors are those you ask? Although red is the most popular color, various shades of green, orange, deeply saturated purplish reds, and even sometimes blue. Not only that, some garnet stones even have a unique color-changing effect like alexandrites do!

Garnet Meaning

Derived from the Latin word “Garanatus”, garnet means “seed-like”. This gemstone appears to have a deep red hue just like the seeds of a pomegranate so the correlation between the birthstones’ meaning and color is ironic!

What Is A Carnation?

Now it’s time to chat about all things carnations! This pretty fringe-petaled flower is native to the Mediterranean Sea and has an interesting “spicy” fragrance to it. Aside from its peculiar fragrance, carnations have a unique history, too! In ancient Greek and Roman times, carnations were used to create garland for décor and art purposes. Additionally in the Elizabethan era, carnation was used to spice ales and wines. How interesting is that?!
When it comes to the colors of carnations, oh are there plenty! Back in the day, carnations were primarily pale pink to peach but now, there are over 50 different varieties of the flower. How awesome is that?! The colors include red, green, yellow, purple, white, orange and even frosted and bi-color! As we’ll soon learn, each color has its own unique meaning!

Carnation Meaning

Just like the garnet gemstone itself, carnations have their own unique meaning too! The scientific name for carnations is “Dianthus Caryophyllus” and in Greek, carnation translates to “flower of the gods”. Carnations are a staple flower for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day due to its meanings of love and remembrance!
So what exactly does each color of carnation represent? Well let us answer that for you! They are as follows:
  • White - pure love, innocence, and remembrance
  • Purple - capriciousness
  • Pink - affection, a Mother’s love
  • Light red - admiration
  • Dark red - deep love
