Emerald Meaning

Like most gems, their meanings have some ancient roots! Emerald originated from the Greek word “smaragdos,” which means “green stone”.

What Is A Lily Of The Valley?

Now it’s time to talk about all things birth flowers! May is all about Lily of the Valley, and this pretty flower has a unique dainty, bell-shaped appearance. This flower is primarily white, but it can also produce pink or purple blossoms as well! Native to Eurasia and naturalized here in North America, this birth flower has a strong and sweet smell to it. Fun fact: this flower is not actually a lily, but rather a member of the asparagus family, Asparagaceae! Who knew?!

Lily Of The Valley Meaning

While Lily of the Valleys’ scientific name is “convallaria majalis”, this birth flower has some interesting nicknames, too! Sometimes, the flower is referred to as “Our Lady’s Tears”, “May Lily” or “May Belles”. How unique is that?
Taking it back in time, it is said in ancient astrology that Lily of the Valley was to be protected by the son of the goddess, Maia. Another legend is that Lily of the Valley fell in love with the song of the nightingale and bloomed when the bird returned to the woods in May.
