We’ll cover what you need to know about getting the right measurements so your ring slips on perfectly.
What is the average woman’s ring size?
For an average female height of 5 ft 4 in, the average ring size is between size 5 and 7.
What is the average man’s ring size?
For an average male height of 5 ft 10 in, the average ring size is between size 9 and 11.
Keep in mind, everyone is different. Just because your significant other is a certain height, it does not suggest a definite, corresponding ring size. We highly recommend that you measure your ring size directly.
Does ring size change with age?
Ring size can change as you grow older. Your body goes through subtle structural changes as you age, from your bone structure to changes in diet. Pregnancy, seasonal/temperature fluctuations, and various medical conditions may also affect ring size.
Does the ring type affect the ring size?
Depending on the ring you buy, you may need to get a size up or down. For wide bands, you may want to get a ring slightly larger to create enough space to bend the finger. Similarly, for stacking rings, a slightly wider size will offer greater flexibility. For thin rings, you may want to order slightly smaller than the true size.

How to accurately measure ring size?
You don’t need to be a jeweler or stylist to measure the correct ring size. There are a few ways to go about measurements:
Visit us for a sizing
To get the best accuracy, we recommend scheduling an appointment and visiting our Chicago location in person. Not only do you get to learn more about our collections, but the whole appointment and sizing service will be free of charge!
Order our ring sizer
Measure the ring on your own with a low-cost ring sizer from our store. This simple, travel-size ring sizer is priced at only $2.50. Sizes are according to American and Canadian half and whole sizes. The advantage to owning a ring sizer is that you'll always have some way of measuring your ring size, even if it changes later on.
If you do measure the ring size yourself, make sure beforehand that your significant other does not drink alcohol, eat high-sodium food, or come from a workout, all of which may affect the measuring accuracy.
Tips for measuring your girlfriend’s ring size
So how does one go about measuring someone’s ring size without being obvious? Here are a few tips:
Ask her friends or family
If you’re close to your girlfriend’s friends or family, you can directly ask them for help. Her mother or siblings may even know her exact ring size. If you want to go for a sneaky approach, try asking her friend to help you, and even take her to the mall or for a fitting just for fun. Make sure it’s a friend with a good poker face!
Borrow one of her existing rings
Your girlfriend may already have dozens of rings lying around. Save yourself the trouble and either borrow or trace one of the rings. Since her rings likely fit her already, you won’t have to worry about getting the correct fit.
Just ask!
While some couples like to do big surprises, others prefer to talk about everything upfront. If you fall into the latter category, you probably don’t have any reservations about directly asking for her ring size. Chances are that she already knows what’s coming, and you both get to avoid sneaking around each other.
Whichever approach you choose, the importance of accurate sizing and measurement cannot be understated. Being aware of the external factors that may influence ring size - such as certain activities before measuring, the temperature, and so on - will help you find the perfect fit for you and/or your significant other. The last thing you want is to invest in an engagement ring that doesn’t fit!
If you’ve already made the purchase and found that the ring did not fit, no worries. At Love & Promise Jewelers, we are happy to offer a free resizing. Please visit our policies page to learn about the specific conditions for the return process.
