August Birthstone Guide: Peridot

Today is all about you August Rosettes! We’re discussing your birthstone, the peridot, from its origins to its unique properties. Let’s dive a little deeper into this gemstone!

Origin

So how did this gem get its name? One thing we do know is “peridot” derives from the Arabic word “faridat”, which means gem. The Egyptians called the stone “the gem of the sun”. The peridot is one of the oldest known gemstones - it dates back as early as 1500 B.C. according to ancient records!
Formed in the mantle of the earth, the peridot forms in magma in the upper portion and is brought to the surface by tectonic or volcanic activity. Additionally, this gem sometimes comes from meteorites however, they are extremely rare. You will most likely never see these in any jewelry store. That’s still pretty cool though!
The peridot comes from the mineral family olivine, which contains a chemical composition of iron and magnesium. The iron in this composition is what causes the yellowish green colors of the gem. Continuing on the topic of color, the color range of this gem is rather narrow. It can be anywhere from a brownish or yellowish green to greenish yellow. The most common shade of peridot seen in jewelry is yellowish green and the most sought after colors are a bright lime green and the more subdued olive greens.

Meaning

The peridot is known for the manifestation of all desired things. What you put out into the world will come your way. This gem also symbolizes strength, good fortune, opportunity, peace and prosperity. When you wear a piece of peridot jewelry, you will see positive changes in your life. You may get that promotion that you have always wanted or take that once in a lifetime trip that’s been on your bucket list. Whatever you are hoping for, those dreams can come true with the peridot!

Healing

Breathe in, breathe out. This gem has quite a few healing properties to keep you calm, cool, and collected. One of them being that it can help with depression. The peridot detoxifies any negative emotions that you may have and bring them to a comfortable level.
Another fun fact about the peridot is that it can help heal and relieve feelings of guilt and lessen obsession. What does this mean? Take this for example. If you are feeling guilty about a situation and you are constantly thinking about it, the peridot will help alleviate those feelings that you may be having.
Feeling a little down lately about yourself? First of all, you’re amazing, and secondly your self-esteem can take a major boost if you have this stone in your possession. There’s no need to feel worthless! Treat yo’ self to a piece of peridot jewelry and all your troubles can fade away. It’s as easy as that!

Metaphysical Properties

Good vibes only! The peridot is associated with the heart and solar-plexus chakra. Additionally, it’s great for increasing Reiki energy. Given this, the energies that the stone emits are unconditional love and to help those who are working to lessen the effects of the ego in their lives. Whether it’s your ego or someone else’s, the peridot will draw one back to reality.
Having trouble trying to figure out how certain people fit in your life? The peridot can help you understand those roles. It can be a significant other, friend, etc. Whatever the case may be, this gem will help resolve challenges in your life, the good and the bad.
The peridot has these “maintenance” type of energies that are great for group situations. How you may ask? The stone gives off vibrations of comfort and positivity for all those within close proximity.
