Debunking Simulated vs Synthetic Diamonds

Debunking Simulated vs Synthetic Diamonds

In this day in age, it’s sometimes hard to tell what’s real and what’s not, especially when it comes to jewelry. Simulated and synthetic diamonds can be a tricky thing to tackle if you’re not ready to purchase a real diamond or alternative stone. Am I buying the right gem? How do I know the difference between the two? Well, Rosette Squad... you’re in luck because we have the answers to all your questions!

Lab-grown vs. Mined or Natural Diamonds

Before we dive into everything that is simulated and synthetic diamonds, we need to talk about lab-grown vs. mined or natural diamonds (conflict-free diamonds). Here at Love & Promise, we’re all about spreading the good juju and giving people the best of the best, especially when it comes to our products. All of our products are conflict free, ethically sourced, and fairly traded. What does this mean? Let us drop some knowledge on ya!

Lab-grown Diamonds

Moving along, lab-grown diamonds, also known as man-made diamonds, are created in a controlled laboratory environment. This advanced process is meant to duplicate how diamonds naturally develop in the earth. Optically, both lab-grown and mined diamonds will look similar to the everyday consumer. To an experienced jeweler, there are some differences in how the stones will sparkle. Depending on the process, some lab-grown diamonds will appear hazier or some will have a warmer tint; these processes are HPHT or CVD. Lab-grown diamonds are generally at least 10-20% more expensive than less expensive, with all characteristics being the same.

Natural Diamonds

Mined or natural diamonds, on the other hand, are dug up from the earth. They don’t go through any processes that would alter their quality. These gems are usually the go-to for people who are able to afford it. The pricing for mined or natural diamonds depends on the 4 C’s – cut, clarity, color, and carat. That being said, the price range varies based on what you want. Typically speaking, natural mined diamonds will be at least 10-20% more expensive.

Why We Offer Lab Grown & Natural Gemstones

We only offer lab-grown or natural gemstone options because we understand the history of the materials and we can stand by the long-term results. All of the materials used in all our fine jewelry can be repurposed for future redesign projects and all our fine jewelry can be repaired versus non-precious alloy based materials.

What is a Simulated Diamond?

Have you ever been told that looks are deceiving? Jewelry is no different. A simulated diamond, also known as a diamond simulant, may look like a diamond but in reality, they do not have the same optical, physical, and chemical properties that an actual diamond has.
Unlike real diamonds, simulated diamonds such as the cubic zirconia rank lower in the durability scale and does require more mindful wear. They are softer and will show wear and tear at a quicker rate compared to a real diamond. For the brands that do offer a “diamond coating” option that makes the stones more durability, understand the coating will wear off over time, usually around 6-12 months. After the coating is worn off, the scratching will occur quickly. We suggest extra mindfulness when cleaning anything with cubic zirconia because aggressive cleaning will quickly remove the “coating” that protects the stone from damages. Purchasing diamond simulants may feel like an immediate saving, but in the long run, purchasing lab-grown or natural options are more cost effective and sustainable!

What is a Synthetic Diamond?

synthetic diamond, also known as a cultivated or cultured diamond, is made from pure carbon, just like diamonds that come from the Earth. This gem can be grown in just a matter of weeks, unlike a natural diamond that takes billions of years to come together. As for synthetic gemstones, the process for recreation is similar in a sense that technology duplicates the same environment and conditions as it would be in nature in order to “create” the gemstones. Although the gem holds some of the same optical properties and chemical compositions as a natural version of a gem, the lab-grown stone is not considered to be “fake” or “imitation.” The gemstone will genetically be the same as their natural sister!

Difference Between Simulated vs. Synthetic Diamonds

You may be thinking, “both gems are not real diamonds, so they are basically the same thing right?!”. Not so fast! Let’s break down the differences.
Diamonds simulants are similar - not the same as diamonds. If the material used was a lab-grown sapphire or moissanite, they would have gladly called this information out instead of calling them diamonds simulants.
Synthetics and lab-grown stones bear physical, optical, and chemical characteristics that are the same as those of their natural counterparts! The only difference is the stones is that they are “grown” in a lab, not in nature.
