Forever One GHI & DEF: What’s the Difference?

In the world of moissanites, there are a few options to choose from - the most popular being Forever One GHI and DEF moissanites. What’s the difference? How will I know what’s the best choice for me? We’re here to give you those answers and more so you can pick the option that suits your style.

What is a Moissanite?

Let’s start with a brief history of moissanites. A moissanite is a rare, naturally occurring mineral that’s also known as silicon carbide. They are also the closet gem that resembles a diamond. Moissanites rank a 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, making them more durable than a sapphire, emerald, or ruby. Strong gems are the best gems!

French chemist Henri Moissan discovered the stone in 1893, originally thinking that it was a diamond. After further research, he realized that the crystals were composed of silicon carbide. Truly, this gem is incredibly rare in so many ways! Most notably, it comes from the stars up in the night sky. Moissanites only crystalize when a meteor hits the earth. Crazy right?!
As you’ll learn later on in this post, we only offer Charles & Colvard moissanites. Their process when it comes to creating a moissanite is extensive, which is what also makes them rare. It takes them about 2-3 months to create a single moissanite. So crazy!

What is a Forever One GHI Moissanite?

A Forever One GHI is a near-colorless moissanite, landing in the second highest bracket of the color spectrum. When exposed to natural light, this gem could show some warmness. As for clarity, it is always very eye clean. What does this mean? The GHI sits on the higher end of the clarity spectrum. Given this, no imperfections are visible. How perfect!
A GHI’s cut is excellent/ideal. Charles & Colvard state that their cuts are “Carefully and precisely faceted, each Charles & Colvard created moissanite gemstone is cut according to exact angles and proportions specific to moissanite. When cutting a moissanite, precision is critical to maximizing its brilliance and enhancing its incredible fire”. Charles & Colvard want to give you the best product possible, and so do we!

What is a Forever One DEF Moissanite?

A Forever One DEF moissanite is a colorless gem that resides at the highest end of the color spectrum. Unlike the GHI, this moissanite should not show warm undertones when exposed to natural light. In terms of clarity and cut, just like the GHI, it is very eye clean and excellent/ideal cut only.

What’s the Difference Between the Two?

To the untrained eye, most people cannot tell the difference between a Forever One GHI and a DEF. If you visit our shop and are looking at these options, we have you guess to see if you can identify them. Lucky for you, we’ve already given you some helpful hints in this post so you’ll ace that test with ease!
Although they look similar, it is important to note that a DEF is colorless and a GHI is near colorless. When light hits the GHI moissanite, you will notice that the stone emits a slight warm hue. This is the only difference between the two gems!

Which One is Right for Me?

When deciding which moissanite is best for you, there are a few factors to keep in mind. The main factor to consider is appearance. If you are unable to tell the difference between the two, a GHI moissanite would be a great choice. If budget isn’t a concern and you would like the best option in the market, you should go DEF baby!
Something to consider when deciding between the GHI or DEF moissanite is the color of alloy. For the silver colored alloy, you may want to consider the Forever One DEF option because the tint of warmth may be more prevalent against the silver color. It’s not as obvious with the “warmer” toned alloys such as yellow or rose gold.
