How to Check Your Ring

Sadly Rosettes, accidents happen and that can be very common with your ring. Stones can become loose and even fall out. This is tragic! We don’t want you to lose any stones so we’re here to help you with some tips and tricks on how to check your ring. Let’s begin!

How Do I Check My Ring?

So you just hit your ring on some sort of hard object. First of all, ouch! Second of all, you might be thinking, did I just damage my ring?! Don’t panic! There are some simple ways to quickly check your ring to see if there is any damage.

To start, you can use a magnifying glass, a 10x loupe (if you have one), or some other sort of object that will give you a closer look at the stones on your ring. This way, you can take a quick glance to see if you can spot any damage or loose stones. When inspecting your ring, you will want to make sure that there are not any gaps. What do we mean by gaps? Well, there could possibly be some space between your stone and a prong. This means that your stone is out of place or that part of it could have been chipped.  

With any ring, you will want to make sure that you have it angled towards the light to see if there’s any movement. You can take your tool and poke at your stone to see if there is anything out of the ordinary. If you see any movement, do not mess with it too much, especially if they are smaller stones. Smaller stones are more susceptible to being harmed because of how delicate they are. Additionally, there is less metal surrounding these kind of stones which means that they could potentially fall out of place.

To inspect your stones, you can take the tip of a pair of tweezers and gently lift or touch the stone(s). It is best to remember to not aggressively press against the stones because more damage may be caused to your ring. Who wants that? When inspecting the stones, you will want to touch the corners, top, bottom, left, and right to see if there is any movement. Always remember to not try and fix the stone yourself! Bring your ring to our shop for repair and you will have it back in no time!

Mindful wear is the best care! It would be a good idea to inspect your ring yourself at least once a week or when something happens to your ring. But what if I tend to be a little clumsy? Now we don’t want to freak you out nor do we want you to excessively inspect your ring 24/7! Being mindful of how you wear your ring is important. Simply, check it when you feel the need to. As always, care is key!  

How Can I Tell If My Center Stone Is Loose?

The main component of your ring may have just been damaged. What’s a girl to do? There are a few ways to take a peek at your center stone to see what’s going on. One way to see if your center stone is loose is to take your thumb and index finger and gently move your fingers back and forth to see if there is any movement.

Again, it’s best to remember not to use too much force when inspecting your center stone. If you do, the prongs may become looser and your center stone could fall out. If that is the case, you will want to go ahead and have your center stone repaired immediately.

Another method that you can use is to take your ring, place it by your ear, and gently shake it. You will be able to hear movement and that will indicate that your center stone is loose. To avoid a lost stone, it would be best to not wear your ring until you are able to bring it in to be repaired. Losing a stone will not be good for you or potentially your wallet.

To avoid any issues, it is always best to make sure that your ring is insured. Here at Love & Promise, we offer a free cleaning and tightening. You can ship or bring in your ring in to be looked at. You can request an appraisal to ensure that your ring will be covered for longer than a year as well. If your order is over $1,000, you will automatically receive one but if your order is anything less than that, you can certainly request one and we will include it in your package.

How Often Should I Get My Ring Professionally Checked?

Now to answer this very important question. We strongly recommend that you bring in your ring from us to be checked every 3-6 months. You can physically drop off the ring yourself or ship it to us. If your decide to drop off your ring and the repair is extremely minor, you can wait about 15-20 minutes for it to be fixed. If it is the opposite, you will be notified when the repairs are done and can come in to pick it up.
