Love & Stories: Michaela and Collyn

Sometimes a friendship blossoms into something more and that’s exactly what happened to Michaela Baker & Collyn Taylor. The South Carolina couple has an oh so sweet love story that they kindly shared with us and are the first couple to be featured in this new blog series that we’ve launched! Let’s hear their story:

How did you meet each other?

Michaela: We met in high school when I was a sophomore and Collyn was a senior, so we are high school sweethearts. We started dating in April of 2013 and he graduated in June, so we really only had two months dating together in high school before he went off to college.

Was it “love at first sight”?

Michaela: Not love at first sight. We were friends before we started dating. I started falling for Collyn when we were at a weekend conference. I’m a big believer you get to know and appreciate someone more when you see them in a different light than you’re used to, and it worked.

How would you describe each other in 3 words?

Three words to describe Collyn: Hilarious, kind, and wise.
Three words to describe Michaela:
Caring, funny, and genuine.

What do you admire about each other?

Michaela: I admire that Collyn is my biggest supporter. He has been since day one. We've been through a lot of life together. From losing family members, new jobs, moves, etc. Collyn has always been my supporter.
Collyn: I’m going to steal that and say Michaela’s also my biggest supporter, too. My job requires me to travel a lot and she never really complains and is always eager to watch me live my dreams. She’s also so selfless when it comes to helping people and is so hard working, it inspires me to be a better person every single day.

How/when did you know that you were “the one” for each other?

Michaela: Funny story; I told Collyn I was going to marry him about three months into our relationship. I actually came down with a case of Mono (yuck) during our first summer together. In the midst of a mono nap, I texted Collyn he was the one and fell back asleep. I basically woke up to an, “Uh what?” text and was embarrassed. I guess mono Michaela had a good intuition. Collyn soon went to college and we did two years in different schools. Then I joined him at college and survived two years together. Then Collyn graduated and we did two years of different stages of our life once again. We know every two years something is going to change. We didn’t know if we would make it all those years but we did and that’s when we knew it was forever.

How did the proposal happen?

Collyn: So I actually started preparing the proposal about three months before actually getting down on one knee. I got permission from her father, bought the ring and worked with her sister planning an engagement on an iconic part of South Carolina’s campus.
The only real snag was since she’s nosy (she’ll even admit that) she tried to figure out any small detail about when and how it was going to happen. I was supposed to work the night I proposed, so I started acting and posting on social media as if I was at work to throw her off the scent.
It worked and she was pretty surprised (she had a good idea it was going to happen sometime soon when I did it) and thankfully said yes. We brought all of her family in for a party afterward and made a video for her detailing all the behind-the-scenes things that happened over the course of the last three months.

What ring(s) did you get from us?

The Bridgette with matching wedding band.

What about the ring caught your eye? Is there any significance behind why you picked the ring(s) that you did?

Michaela: So, fun long storytime. I pinned the Bridgette on Pinterest forever ago. Pinterest used to tell you the original date you pinned something but they don't anymore. If I had to guess, I would say I pinned it sometime in middle/high school. Now, this was love at first sight. It was different but elegant. I LOVED it. I showed all my girlfriends this ring when we would talk about weddings. I followed this ring so long I saw the Etsy listing photos change.
When Collyn and I knew things were getting serious I went and tried on rings with my sister and Collyn. All the rings I tried on didn't even compare to the Bridgette and I hadn't even seen it in person! I obsessively watched all Instagram stories waiting for it to appear. Then I got nervous the 8x6mm might be too big for my small hands. I messaged Customer Service to see if they could send me a size comparison photo. Shoutout to BreAnne for sending me a photo of the ring next to a penny. Collyn thought I was crazy for doing this but seriously A+ Customer Service.
Fast forward a few more months and Collyn got down on one knee with the perfect pink Rosados Box. It was everything I wanted and more. It fit PERFECTLY.
Love at first sight was right. The Bridgette was my dream ring. Since then I have gotten so many compliments on the ring. Everyone loves it and I am so happy I pinned it on Pinterest all those years ago.

What are you looking forward to the most about your wedding day or marriage in general?

Michaela: I’m looking forward to having a great time with all our friends and family and celebrating our marriage. I can plan for the perfect wedding all I want but as long as Collyn is by my side I know that’s all I need.
Collyn: I’m looking forward to getting to spend that day with Michaela and seeing her in her dress. In terms of marriage, just knowing I get to come home every day to my best friend excites the heck out of me. Having someone like that who’s such a comforting presence all the time makes me ready for the next 11 months to fly by.

Do you have any advice for couples in regards to marriage, love, relationships?

Never stop getting to know your partner. Collyn and I are still learning new things about one another. Take note of the little things your partner loves and do those. Never stop pursuing them.
