Ask Love & Promise: What’s the Right Way to Wear My Wedding Rings?

Congratulations! You just got your dream ring and will eventually have to start thinking about another band or two to go along with it. This brings an important question to light: what is the “right way” to wear my rings? Believe it or not, this is one of the most commonly asked questions that we receive. Today, we’re here to share some insight on how to rock your rings as well as some other helpful answers to some not so uncommon questions. Let’s dive in!

History

Before we hop into these frequently asked questions, let’s share a little history. We hate to be the bearer of bad news Rosettes, but the engagement ring does not have a pleasant past (not to worry though, things have certainly changed!). In ancient times, the engagement ring was nothing more than a mark of ownership. Women wore these rings “to signify a business contract to reaffirm mutual love and obedience”. That’s not cool right?! These rings were made out of flint, ivory, bone, iron and copper.
Later on, in Pompeii, gold rings were found in the ruins and it became the common choice for that era. Fun fact: Romans were known to own two engagement rings - iron rings were to be worn at home and gold rings were for wearing out in public. This paved the way for the travel ring trend that most may be familiar with today. Now here’s the happy ending you’ve all been waiting for! In 850, the engagement ring finally got the proper meaning it deserves all thanks to Pope Nicolas I. It symbolized a man’s intent to marry.

What’s the Difference Between an Engagement Ring & a Wedding Ring?

When it comes to the word’s engagement ring and wedding ring, sometimes there’s a little confusion. Are they the same thing? Not quite. While you may hear people say the names interchangeably, they each have their own meaning. An engagement ring is the one that you are proposed to with. A wedding ring, or wedding band, is the one you receive on your wedding day.

How Should I Wear My Rings During and After the Wedding Ceremony?

Traditionally, wedding bands are worn closest to the heart. This means that your engagement ring will be worn on top of your wedding band. During the ceremony, you can wear your engagement ring on your right hand and then switch it over to your ring finger after the ceremony. Your wedding set look will then be complete!

Can Men Wear Engagement Rings?

Fellas, engagement rings aren’t just for the ladies - you can wear them too! While you may not see it as often, it’s not an uncommon occurrence. In fact, some of your favorite celebs have been seen rocking an engagement ring after they popped the question to their other half! Some of these celebs include Ed Sheeran and Michael Bublé. Most recently, former pro skier Lindsey Vonn popped the question to her fiancé NHL P.K. Subban, even though he proposed to her 2 years ago. Her reasoning behind this gesture was equality and that “men should get engagement rings too”. Go out and rock that ring, dudes!

When I Receive Additional Bands as an Anniversary Gift, How Should I Stack It With My Current Rings?

So many ways to stack, the choice is yours! There’s really no rule on how to stack your rings once an anniversary band is thrown into the mix. You can have your engagement ring nestled in between your bands or stack both bands on top of each other below your ring. You do you!
