With the spinel, its name derives from not one but TWO different languages! In Latin, the name spinel derives from the word “spinella”, meaning little thorn. Interesting, but how did this come about? Well, it’s all because of the little sharp points on the crystal! In Greek, spinel is derived from the word “spinther”, which means sparkling. This truly makes sense since the spinel is quite the sparkly gem!
The spinel comes in a wide range of colors! From orange to red, vibrant shades of pink, and all shades of purple, blue, blueish green, and violet. What causes these unique and array of colors? Some spinels include traces of chromium, iron, and cobalt which makes colors more intense and vibrant. How cool is that? Origin
The spinel has an interesting beginning to it as it was often mistaken as other gems! Many thought that they were rubies and sapphires but when they were looked at further, they realized they had another gem on their hands. In ancient times when stones were mined for the royal courts of Rome and China, they thought they were going to be getting rubies and sapphires but instead they were receiving spinels. Other places such as Central and southeast Asia had plenty of spinel crystals and became known as Balas rubies. These were favored by the emperors and kings. Talk about fancy schmancy, huh?
